The Foundation

The Christiane-Nüsslein-Volhard-Foundation was established in 2004 and assists female PhD students regardless of their nationality, who work in the field of experimental natural sciences or medical research within German research institutes. By providing these women with monthly financial support for additional childcare and household duties the foundation enables them to be more committed in fulfilling their jobs. This in turn influences the stability within their families in a positive way.

Within an overall social context the Christiane-Nüsslein-Volhard-Foundation plays a significant role in providing ×Germanywith highly qualified women for the top research positions of the future. 


The founder of the foundation

Mrs. Christiane-Nüsslein-Volhard studied biochemistry and graduated in 1968. Four years later she received her PhD in the academic field of genetics. Since 1985 she has been director for developmental biology at the Max-Planck-Institute in Tübingen. In 1995 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine.
